J. Cole Samples Minnie Riperton’s “Inside My Love”

Rapper and producer J. Cole surprised fans by releasing two new music videos “False Prophets” and “Everybody Dies,” as a precursor to his anticipated album 4 Your Eyez Only dropping this Friday. The latter song samples the lustful Minnie Riperton hit “Inside My Love” (1975) in a slightly higher key. Co-written by Riperton herself, Richard Rudolph and Leon Ware, the acclaimed single continues to hold great importance since originally appearing on Adventures in Paradise (1975). Numerous covers have carried the classic throughout the last two decades and most notably has been sampled by Timbaland for Aaliyah’s “Heartbroken” (1996) and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Lyrics to Go” (1993). You can hear J. Cole’s sample at the 3:07 mark here. Watch J. Cole’s two new music videos and his Tidal documentary, recently featured in Billboard.

Billboard Premieres Jóhann Jóhannsson's "Heptapod B"

Billboard has exclusively premiered Jóhann Jóhannsson's “Heptapod B,” as a prelude to the brand new film Arrival and its experimental score. It was one of the composer’s first written pieces for the sci-fi thriller, which has been gaining some serious Oscar buzz since its film festival run. Jóhannsson explains to Billboard, “'Heptapod B' is featured in a montage sequence which demonstrates the various methods that Louise [Amy Adams] and Ian [Jeremy Renner] use to decipher the aliens’ language.” The track sonically illustrates the scene well - ensemble vocals act as instrumental components, cultivating raw ambiguity underneath a bold, progressive structure.

Max Richter Scores Black Mirror 'Nosedive' Episode

Berlin-based composer Max Richter has crafted the score for 'Nosedive' - the opening episode for Black Mirror’s third series. Originally aired in Britain in 2011, the Charlie Brooker series focuses on the twisted real-life love and co-dependency of technology through episode-based scenarios. Black Mirror has recently found new hype and critical acclaim this past December as a recent Netflix addition. Richter and director Joe Wright worked closely on the ‘Nosedive’ episode together which is described as “a social satire about identity in the social media age.” This is not the first time Richter explores powerful social themes through his contemporary classical style – Waltz With Bashir, The Leftovers (HBO, third season) and the upcoming Miss Sloane all have their own underlying psychological twists illustrated by Richter’s storytelling abilities through sound. For more on creating the ‘Nosedive’ soundtrack, here is Richter’s in-depth interview with FACT. Stream Richter's 'Nosedive' soundtrack here.

Jimmy Webb Premieres Piano & Orchestra Works

Jimmy Webb, the only songwriter with hits in pop, country, disco and rap, now adds a classical nocturne to his catalog. Orchestra Kentucky (Jeff Reed, Music Director), pianist Jeffrey Biegel, and G. Schirmer, Inc. (part of the Music Sales Corporation) announce the world premiere of Jimmy Webb's Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra (Nocturne for "Lefty") on Monday, October 24th at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Known for legendary hits including 'Wichita Lineman,' and 'MacArthur Park,' the Grammy-award winning songwriter and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame teamed up with pianist Jeffrey Biegel and Orchestra Kentucky for this unique project, funded by donor Dr. Robert G. Schiff. Following the premiere, Webb will join Orchestra Kentucky to perform his hits, including 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix,' 'Up, Up and Away,' and others. On October 25th, Orchestra Kentucky will award Webb with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra (Nocturne for "Lefty"), composed by Webb (for pianist Jeffrey Biegel), was orchestrated by Webb together with Grammy-winner Jeff Tyzik. Webb dedicated the work to his wife and partner Laura Savini. About the composition, Webb said: 'This music originated in discussions I had with my wife about famous nocturnes such as "Moonlight Sonata" and others. The piece depicts different aspects of nightfall; the mathematical exactitude of life in the city, the splendor of night skies and full moons partially obscured by cloud, the gentle rise and fall of human conversation in social gatherings and the dizzying whirl of waltzing on a seaside esplanade. It is essentially an opportunity for the listener to contemplate their own experiences during the hours of darkness. It includes a personal tribute to the music of Miles Davis, and the smoky dives and small clubs where I performed in my early years: the kingdom of the lonely and disillusioned. "Lefty" is my wife, Laura Savini, of PBS fame, a raving beauty who is also a Southpaw. The notes have been inspired by her joy and devotion to art.' Orchestrator Jeffrey Tyzik noted: 'It was a great pleasure to collaborate with Jimmy Webb on his new multi-faceted composition Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra (Nocturne for "Lefty"). I have been a great admirer of Jimmy's huge body of work since the 1960s and I was honored to be a part of orchestrating his beautiful music for symphony orchestra. Jimmy writes from the heart and continues to be an inspiration for all songwriters.' Pianist and Collaborator Jeffrey Biegel added: 'The sonic landscape of Jimmy's piece is instantly ear-catching and beautifully laid out for the piano. One reason I approached Jimmy is because he is a songwriter and his sense of melody and harmony suit the genre for piano and orchestra. He treats the piano in a unique style which immediately grabbed my attention the moment I received the piano part.' Webb's compositions have always been highly influenced by classical music and structure. He is a student of classical music and was deeply inspired by the opportunity to create this piece. Music Sales Group Acquires “The Twist”

Music Sales Group is excited to announce it has acquired the U.S. publishing rights to “The Twist,” written by Hank Ballard and recorded by Chubby Checker. Billboard declared “The Twist” as “the biggest chart hit of all time” in 2008. It is the only song in history to have held the No. #1 spot in two separate release cycles - first in September 1960 and then in January 1962. By popularizing a rendition of Hank Ballard’s original on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, Chubby Checker’s recording of “The Twist” truly revolutionized American pop culture and dance in 1960. It encouraged those to “dance apart from the beat” and brought rock n’ roll to a national audience. “The Twist” was not only popular among younger crowds, but the iconic song unexpectedly resonated with an adult audience, which was a turning point in the acceptance of contemporary pop music and styled group dance. "It’s impossible to talk about the post-WWII American songbook without referencing “The Twist.” It’s not just a hit song that spawned a dance craze, but an integral part of early rock n’ roll that defined the American experience in the early 1960’s,” said John Castaldo, SVP at Music Sales Corporation. “The lyric, ‘My daddy is sleepin’ and mama ain’t around’ propelled the nation’s youth to embrace their independence, foreshadowing America’s counterculture revolution that culminated in Woodstock.”
